Susan J. Kukielka - Principal
Susan J. Kukielka has been Principal of Decatur Classical School since 2005, leading this diverse school of exceptional learners and dedicated staff. Since coming to Decatur, “Ms. K” as she is known to the Decatur community, has expanded our Science Program, PE Programming and procured an Artist in Residence Program. She has also renewed a dedication to education by increasing the additional certification and professional development of the teaching faculty.
Her leadership and organizational skills have brought a cohesiveness to the school that has made this regional school feel like a real family. She has found the perfect combination that spurs our success; teachers, staff, students and parents all play an important role on the Decatur team. Adored and respected by all, her door is always open to those who need her.

“Mrs. J” brings the energy to Decatur. From handling bussing issues to discipline and organization, you'll always find she has a smile and a kind word to share.
Since coming to Decatur in 2005, she has brought with her years of classroom and educational experiences. Helping to keep the Decatur spirit burning bright, Mrs. J shows a commitment to the students as she shares their enthusiasm and love for learning.

Mr. P is a retired Chicago Police Officer and serves Decatur with the same commitment he gave to the citizens of Chicago. Keeping our school and its community safe at all times, he welcomes all from his security desk by the main entry.

Decatur Classical School has been #1 in the State of IL on ISAT scores
for 16 of the past 17 years
- Decatur was honored by the Chicago Board of Education for its achievements at a televised board meeting where we received a citation of recognition.
- Decatur students have consistently triumphed at local, regional, state and national levels of competition in Math, Latin, Science, Music, Art and Problem Solving.
- Decatur students place in the highest levels in the Math, Essay and Oratory Competitions at the Academic Olympics.
- Decatur 5th and 6th graders participate in the Metropolitan History Fair and students frequently progresss to the State level.
- Students participate in the Spelling Bee and move to finals at the City level.
- Students participate in the National Geography Bee and achieve high honors at National levels.
- 100% of Decatur students consistently score above national norm in Math and in Reading.
- ISAT scores were the highest in the state in 14 of the last 15 years, with the Science and Writing ranking in the highest percentiles.
- Decatur has been consistently recognized for Exemplary Student Achievement.

- Students have won first place in the Intermediate Division of the Young Author's Contest, the Hispanic Heritage Essay Contest, the Immigration Awareness Essay Contest, the Chicago Inner City Games Essay Contest and the Academic Olympics Essay and Oratory Competitions.
- Decatur routinely achieves high ranking scores at the annual Region 1 Science Fair.
- The Decatur Problem Solving Team formed in 1995, won the Illinois State competition the first time it competed, and has continued to win 1st place each subsequent year.
