Important Information Regarding Bussing 2011-2012
**Bussing will begin on Tuesday, September 6, 2011
**Park District bussing will begin on Monday, September 19, 2011
Please write the name of the school where your child catches the bus at the top of the 2011-2012 bus application form. This information is needed to input each application into the system and will save the Decatur staff countless hours.
- Parents/guardians of students currently enrolled and receiving bus service as well as parent of students new to bust service, MUST complete a form.
- Parents/gaurdians MUST submit a copy of a current utility bill (April or May's electric or gas bill) with their application. Failure to submit this copy may result in the delay of processing your request.
- If you do not require or do not qualify for bus service, please fill in our child(ren)'s name only, and mark "Do not want" on the bus form and return to school. You need not include a copy of your utility bill with your form.
- If your child(ren) will be attending a Chicago Park District program in the Fall, please fill out the "GREEN" form. This form must be attached to your "WHITE" form, and is also due no later than June 3, 2011
- Faxed forms will NOT be accepted.
- "Applications for School Bus Service" (WHITE forms) must be returned to the school office no later than June 3, 2011, preferably before.
School buses regularly leave school grounds at 2:30 p.m. Your child's bus driver will need to inform you of your bus drop-off time. If there is an emergency or other situation and your child will not ride the school bus in the afternoon, you must send/fax a note to the office before noon. Telephone requests to keep your child off the afternoon bus will not be accepted.
Appropriate behavior is critical to bus service. Children who are discipline problems on the bus can be removed from the bus. Children must remain in their seat at all times and be respectful of each other and the driver. No food, drink, cell phones, video games, balls, etc.are allowed. Park District Drop-Off requests will be reviewed by the CPS Bureau of Student Transportation. The Bureau of Student Transportation will authorize who and when park district bussing will begin which is typically late September.
To qualify for bussing, you must live more than 1.5 miles and no more than 6 miles from Decatur Classical School. This is determined by the Chicago Board of Education. If you have questions about bussing, please contact Mrs. Jockl in the main office at 773.534.2200.

LIBRARY SUPPORT
Decatur students have library once a week. Library Helpers read to the younger grades, help students find and check out books, shelve books and keep the bookshelves organized, among other duties.

SCHOOL PLAY
The school play involves each and every student at Decatur and requires a small army of volunteers. The school play is held in May at Mather High School Auditorium over two evenings and is another great opportunity to support Decatur and your child – plus it’s a lot of fun!
Volunteer opportunities: Set Design, Costumes, Make-up, Dressers, Stage Hands, Admissions, Program Design and more.
FIELD TRIP CHAPERONES
Decatur students take many field trips throughout the school year. Parents are asked to volunteer their time to assist teachers on field trips to ensure the safety of all our students. Field Trip Chaperones are chosen on a first come first serve basis after the field trip forms are distributed. All forms have a section to volunteer on the bottom of the form. Field trip forms are sent out a couple of weeks prior to the actual date of the field trip to ensure that working parents are given the opportunity to take time off of work if they choose. Field trip dates are also on the school calendar sent out at the beginning of each month.
BOOK SWAP
The book swap is an opportunity for students to bring in grade appropriate used books and swap them with their classmates. This event takes place during the school day, approximately 5 times a year.

PTA Volunteering Opportunities
ROUND UP
This Rodeo-themed event is our PTA’s annual membership drive. It is the perfect opportunity to join the PTA and catch up with friends new and old. There are numerous fun-filled activities, such as face painting, tattoos, games, square dancing, and a campfire sing along. The party is held outdoors on the playground. Admission is free with your paid PTA membership.

HALLOWEEN PARTY
The annual Decatur Halloween Party is a costume party full of horrific fun, food, games, and lots of trick-or-treating.

JOG-A-THON
The Jog-A-Thon is Decatur’s second largest fundraising event. The students, teachers and staff, run laps to raise money for the school. Money is raised through pledges and sponsorships. Your child raises money by asking family, friends and/or neighbors to sponsor them with a per-lap pledge or flat donation. Family and corporate sponsorships also contribute to the fundraising effort. For a flat fee, a sponsor’s name, message to their child or business logo will be prominently displayed on the back of the Jog-A-Thon t-shirt. Each participating student receives a specially designed Jog-A-Thon t-shirt. The kids love to wear them on gym and field trip days. And they especially love to see their names on the back!
Volunteer opportunities: Corporate Sponsor Solicitation; T-Shirt Design, Production and Distribution; Lap Counters; Hydration Team; Snack Table; Runners; Prize Distribution.
SPRING FUNDRAISER
This is the number one fundraising event of the year. The money raised at this adult-only event allows the PTA to fund social events and activities, as well as teacher needs and capital improvements. Proceeds from previous Spring Fundraisers have gone toward school improvements such as the Science Lab, the Computer Lab, solar shades, and interactive Smartboards for every classroom, to name a few.
Volunteer opportunities: Raffle Ticket Sales, Decorations, Donation Solicitation, Room Basket Collection, and Class Art Project Direction, Set Up, Working the Event, Check Out, Clean Up
SPRING FLING/ALL SCHOOL PICNIC
This year-end carnival is a free all-school event held to celebrate the student’s hard work during the past school year. The day begins with a fun-filled morning and picnic in neighboring Lerner Park. The festivities continue in the afternoon on school grounds with carnival games, obstacle courses, and even a dunk tank to help the kids blow off some spring fever steam!

TASTE OF DECATUR
This Ravinia-style evening event is a celebration of Decatur’s diverse community. Families contribute to this potluck-style dinner with dishes that reflect their ethnic background or interests. Diners also get to enjoy a concert given by the Chicago Children’s Choir featuring our very own talented Decatur students! Donations of disposable plates, napkins, utensils, and beverages are encouraged.

BARNES & NOBLE - DECATUR PERFORMS
See Decatur students and teachers shine! This event is hosted by Barnes & Noble on Touhy. Anyone wishing to perform may do so on the Children’s Stage in the Kids Section of the store. Treats are provided. Vouchers are passed out both at school and at the event to use at check out. A portion of all sales from vouchers turned in goes to Decatur. It’s a great way to get some shopping done and support the school.

FOUNDER'S DAY
This is a celebration of the founding of Parent Teacher Associations in America. The PTA hosts a buffet lunch to honor all those who came before us. You will be asked to bring a dish to share or make a monetary contribution to help cover purchased entrees. Performances by the Kindergarten class and the Decatur Chicago Children’s Choir make this an event to remember!

COMMUNIQUE
The Communique is Decatur’s newsletter. This parent-run publication is a great resource and a fun way to keep up with all of the wonderful things going on at school.

REFLECTIONS CONTEST
The PTA Reflections Contest is a national competition sponsored by the PTA. Every year a different theme is given to the students who then create projects reflecting their interpretation of the theme. Projects can take the form of original music, art, photography, film, poetry or essay. Judges pick a designated number of winners from each category who then advance to the regional level. All entries are given a participation ribbon. Winners are invited to a special banquet held for all of the regional winners. The 2011-2012 theme is "Diversity Means..."

SCHOOL PICTURE DAY

The Decatur PTA supplies parent volunteers to support our school photo day. The photography studio supplies combs for all the students and mirrors are available for last minute primping.

We have the Garden Club to thank for keeping Decatur’s grounds beautiful.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR
The Scholastic Book Fair happens twice yearly and helps support the purchase of new
books for our library and classrooms. Scholastic provides books and small items to sell
to our community with a percentage of sales going toward book credit for our school.
Scholastic credits can also be used to buy other useful classroom items from area
rugs to classroom shelving. The book fair is a week-long event that takes place at
school.

REPORT CARD PICK UP
During the two extremely hectic report card pick-up days, the PTA assists the teachers and staff by providing lunch.

SCIENCE NIGHT
This is a special night of fun for the primary grades (K-3). Hands on science “stations” are set up throughout the school and run by upper grade students and parents. This is a great evening that makes science fun and interesting for all.

SPORTSWEAR
The PTA sells sportswear items including the clothes students must wear on gym days. T-shirts, sweatshirts, sweatpants, shorts, and other Decatur items are available at several times throughout the year. Order forms may also be found on the Decatur website.

GRANTS
There is money out there to be had. The key is to find it and win it! We need people with strong research and writing skills to find and apply for grants to help fund projects and improvements throughout the school.

ROOM REP
Room Reps are the link between the parents and the classroom. The Room Rep will help with classroom organization on things such as holiday parties, class gifts, Spring Fundraiser activities such as financial collection and leadership for Room Baskets and Room Art Projects, etc. This position requires that you occasionally create flyers, collect classroom funds for the PTA, help in the classroom and make phone calls/email parents.
