Hi Decatur Family!
 
My name is Kevin Roper. I have been teaching for the past eight years. This will be my fourth year at Decatur having previously taught first grade. I am originally from Northwest Indiana. I received my Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from Alderson Broaddus University in West Virginia. I am happy to apart of our SEED team here at Decatur and coaching volleyball. I am currently pursuing my ESL endorsement. When I am not teaching you can find me walking with my dog, reading, playing volleyball or near the lake. I am excited to be teaching 3rd and 5th grade this year. I am looking forward to a great year!

Secret Reader Alert! Today we were joined by another amazing secret reader! Our students listened to "Mr. G" a story using written letters. "100 Mighty Dragons All Named Broccoli" and "No Kimchi For Me."  Thank you for spending time with us today!
On Thursday, February 1st, we celebrated National Hijab Day! We had the privilege of learning all about Hijabs and reading the "Proudest Blue." Thank you to our classmate and her family for helping us learn about their culture and the meaning of Hijabs!
Secret Reader Alert! We had another great secret reader this week. We heard two stories, "Dog Loves Drawing," and "Silly Tilly." Thank you for spending time with us this week. We appreciate you!
SECRET READER ALERT! This week our students learned about Bangladesh and had the book "My Country is Bangladesh" donated to our classroom. Thank you for sharing your culture with us and spending time in our classroom! We loved having you!
This week we spent time with our buddies! During our buddy time we created goals three goals for 2024. 
This week students learned about Seollal, a Korean celebration of the Lunar New Year. Our students saw tradition garments worn during the celebration. They also were given keychains and created puppets! Thank you to one of our amazing parents for coming in and sharing their culture with the class! It was great having you!
Secret Readers from 1/12 came and read Milo's Hat Trick and Spend it! Students tried to add on to Milo's Hat trick and the magic of the ending, and even tried to make sense of paying for items with carrots!
Thank you for coming in and spending time with us! We loved having you both!
Secret Reader from 1/19! Our secret reader came in and read Where's Halmoni and Wish Soup. Each story taught us about Korean Culture! We even learned rock, paper, scissors in Korean. Gawi, Bawi, Bo! Thank you for spending time with us this week!
Students drew and identified feelings based on observations of facial structures. Students expressed times in which they felt each emotion. 
Secret Reader Number 6! Today we learned about Hanukkah! Students were given the chance to play dreidel, ask questions about the holiday and listen to music. Thank you for spending time with us today and teaching us about Hanukkah! 
Secret Readers number 5! Thank you for spending time with us this week, it was great hearing "I'm Going to Eat That Ant." and "A Giraffe and a Half." 
Secret Reader Week 4! 
This week our secret reader had the class giggling with "Bathe The Cat."

This week students began to build an outline to their narratives. Students created a series of events that included some problems, solutions, and how their story began. 
Our third secret reader this year! Our class was lucky to be joined by two secret readers today! Our students listened to The Three Questions and The World Needs More Purple People! Thank you for spending time with us today!
