Makerspace Expectations

What is Makerspace?

Makerspace is a very unique course for students to imagine, tinker, create, question, collaborate, experiment and invent in a safe environment. When we make mistakes in class, we recognize failure isn’t the end but an opportunity to analyze our situation and take a new path towards our goals.  We persevere to rethink and try our design and ideas again. I highly encourage you to speak with your child regarding their experience in class. For some, this may be a new way of learning than they have been traditionally accustomed to.

Every grade will explore the engineering design process through our hands-on curriculum from Project Lead the Way. These units will supplement units they are exploring in class on topics such as:  light and sound, collisions, properties of matter and robots and animation. Students will gain coding skills and apply them to operating robots. The Makerspace curriculum will also be flexible and change based on the interests of our students.

I am extremely fortunate to be leading Decatur’s efforts in ensuring our students are developing the skills needed for 21st century job opportunities as we begin our fifth year of programming. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out by email at [email protected] I look forward to working with you and your child this year!
