Biography

Ms. Sharping is a highly-qualified teacher with over 20 years of experience and middle school teaching endorsements in reading, math, science, and social studies. As a product of the Chicago Public School system, Ms. Sharping is dedicated to public school education and arts integration. Ms. Sharping graduated summa cum laude from Loyola University Chicago with a degree in Elementary Education. She earned her masters from the American College of Education in Curriculum and Instruction. Her favorite way to teach is through discussion, small group activities and projects. When she is not teaching, she enjoys spending time with her family, painting, and playing competitive tennis.

Silhouette Narratives | Students in 7th grade developed silhouette narratives inspired by artist, Kara Walker. Their narratives focused on the untold stories of the individuals enslaved by our nation's First President, George Washington.

Group One-Pagers | Students in 7th and 8th grade completed group one-pagers that utilized primary sources connected to the post American Revolution era and the Little Rock Nine.

Critical Thinking One-Pager | Each class in Jr. High has been assigned a critical thinking one-pager to show their understanding of our current study units. Students in 6th grade (shown above) have been looking into the factors that changed Germany from a democracy to a dictatorship. 7th grade students have been analyzing the factors that increased tensions between Great Britain and the colonists prior to the American Revolution. Last, 8th graders have been examining the impacts of the Plessy v. Ferguson decision on the nation's history.

Kindergarten & 8th Grade Buddies

Students in Kindergarten and 8th grade buddied up to make thank your cards to Decatur teachers. 8th graders helped our Kindergarteners decorate and write thoughtful messages of gratitude. It was wonderful to see our youngest and oldest students bond!

Field Museum | Native Truths

7th Graders toured and analyzed the new Native Truths exhibit in the Field Museum. The new exhibition is a collaboration of museum curators with various Native advisors to integrate the voices of Native and Indigenous peoples into the redesign to provide them with the platform to shape and tell their own stories and histories.

Wild Mile

8th Graders took a field trip the Wild Mile to launch a multi-year project to design their own floating garden in a different section of the Chicago River and closer to our community.

Jr. High Name Plates | Finally was able to display all the student name plates that we created in the beginning of the year. The name plates recognized the origins and stories of our students' given names, preferred names and nicknames.

Officially Done! 8th graders smiling big after finishing the HS Entrance exam today. We are so proud of all of our 8th graders!!

Utopia One-Pager | 8th grade students began thinking about their ideal world and society: naming it, designing it's flag, and reflecting on the laws, lifestyle, and leadership of their perfect society.

Understanding Emotions | We have a fishbowl of emotions to talk about the different ways we express ourselves when we are feeling disappointed, hurt, excited, etc.

Analyzing Teacher Artifacts

Jr. High students analyzed trays of artifacts from their Decatur teachers. Students were tasked with trying to figure out to whom the artifacts belonged to based on evidence they've collected throughout the years they've had us as teachers.

Head, Shoulders, Knees, BALL!

Jr. High students took a break to play a quick game to test their reaction time.

Choices in the Holocaust | 6th grade students reviewed case studies of teachers as the Nazi's rose to power. Students analyzed their choices to help or not help their students and connected it to the role of teachers and education in today's society.

In Pursuit of Dreams | As part of our integrated unit through the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, 5th graders began imagining the future and the possibilities it holds.
