Drop Off/Pick Up Reminders

You may have noticed some changes to the property as construction gets underway!
Ms. Luna communicated important reminders in her Principal's Newsletter.
Here they are in case you missed them.
We understand that these expectations will take more time and that parents need to get to their next destination. However, we need your help and cooperation to keep children, staff, and other families safe.
We also need to be good neighbors and remember that there are other children walking to school. Your patience and support will make a big difference.
  • We need all parents to slow down, especially during morning drop off. We expect more congestion due to buses and the closed sidewalk further down on Sacramento.
  • Our staff will be more 'hands-on' in directing traffic in the morning and we need parents to please comply with any directions.
  • Do not block the crosswalk or a neighbor's driveway.
  • Please do not stop or pull over on either side of Sacramento except in the 'Kiss & Go' designated area.
  • The construction has now taken over the entire back area due to the accelerated timeline. This is an important step to help their efforts to complete the building on time. Parents can still pick up in the back of the building, outside their assigned doors, but will need to leave the back area as soon as they have their child to avoid congestion.
  • If you are picking up your child after school, you must park legally in the neighborhood. Do not park with your hazard lights on Sacramento or in the alley.
  • We've had a great deal of congestion and near-accidents during after school pick up. As much as possible, please find legal parking in the neighborhood and do not block the crosswalk, driveways, parking lot entry, etc.
  • Parents may not use the school parking lot to park, turn around, or quickly drop off their children.

Decatur students have created a unique performance based on Shel Silverstein's poetry, "Anything Can Be."
The performance dates are January 29th at 1:00 pm and January 30th at 9:30 am and 1:00 pm. The students in the show are Kindergarteners, 1st graders, 3rd graders, and 5th graders. Many students in 4th and 6th grades are involved in the show through ensembles or a crew. Please visit the show page to view your child's costume requirements as well as reserve your free ticket(s) to the show.
Please only reserve the amount of tickets you will need as shows can sell out. If you have a change of plans, please cancel your tickets.

Weather: It's getting cold outside. Please make sure students are dressed for the weather. Students will go outside for gym and recess as much as possible.
Please label items, especially boots, hats, scarves, and gloves - we're getting quite of collection of gloves and hats that no one is claiming.
Illness: It's that time of year...We want to have each and every child in school every day, but if your child is sick, please be mindful and keep your child at home. This will give your child time to rest and get well and help keep us all healthy.
Safety:  Safety is a priority at Decatur. During the school day, all visitors must check-in with the office. Only approve CPS volunteers are allowed in areas where children are present, this includes the library, multipurpose room, and the playground.
After school, there are many activities taking place, visitors must remain in the North Lobby and not wander around the building. Please speak with someone in the main office if you need help.

First Grade Placemats!

Wow! A big THANKS to room 104 parents, Sarah Barrish and Jo Machado, for creating the outstanding first-grade placemats that went home on Thursday! This tradition started in kindergarten and I am so happy that they offered to do it again for both first-grade classes! The placements will be great to help students remember the names of new friends! If you get a chance, please thank these lovely parents who put this together for our classes!
