Week 2
Hi families!
We have been very busy in 3rd grade! It has been so fun getting to know your children. I'm looking forward to our year together & hope to meet many of you at Open House on Thursday, September 10th!
Math : This week we started off by looking at patterns, noticing how some were repeating patterns and others changed as they went. Later in the week we focused more on multiples and common multiples. We talked about how identifying multiplies is just like skip counting and how helpful it is when multiplying. Students wrapped the up week by completing their first online math lesson. We spent time talking about how we can use technology to help model different concepts that might be challenging to see in real life! Students will have their 1st Math Quiz next Friday (9/11). Please check out the at-home resource tabs on my page to see some resources available to you at home!
Science: This week we took on the role of meteorologists to help the Wildlife Protection Organization collect data. We had great discussions about why having one unit of measurement is helpful when collecting data. We had a small experiment investigating how we can measure rainfall using non-standard units of measurement.
Week 3
Math : This week students learned about prime and composite numbers. We talked about how differing amount of factors determines whether a number is prime or composite. We learned a couple new math centers this week and students did a great job working with their partners. Students had their first quiz this week and did a great job going back to double check their thinking! Next week we will wrap up Unit 1 and have our Unit 1 Test on Monday, 9/21. More info to come on this!
Science: This week students started to collect data on weather in our area. We observed how thermometers work as well as rain gauges. We will be gathering data over the next week to see if there are any patterns we can pick up on.
To honor 9/11, Principal Negron came in to both 3rd grade classes to read This Very Tree . Students engaged in a whole class discussion how we can honor all those that helped out on September 11th by carrying out our own acts of kindness for those in our school & community.

Week 4
Math: This week students practice differentiating between factors and multiples. We wrote clues for Mystery Numbers using math vocabulary we have been practicing in class. Students had the opportunity to guess what others Mystery Numbers were. We wrapped this week up by review for our first Unit Test! We will take that on Monday, September 21st. Students were sent home with an answer key they filled in and a blank test to review at home (this is not homework!). Please check out 'At-Home Resource' page for more ways to prepare at home.
Science : This week students wrapped up gathering data on weather. We read about a student who kept a Sky Journal that included weather data from his area. Students learned how they can gather weather data without having the most high tech devices available. We wrapped the week up by reflecting on our Chapter question. Students learned about what a Scientific Explanation is and how supporting evidence is necessary when making a claim, especially in science. Students wrote about which Island, based on data, would be best for the orangutans to live on.
Week 5
Math : This week in Math, students wrapped up Unit 1 with their test on Monday. Those were sent home on Thursday. We are now in Unit 2 focusing on fractions. Students focused on equivalent fractions and used fractions strips to help visualize that. We will continue to talk about fraction size and equivalent fractions well into next week. We will have a quiz on Tuesday, 9/30! Be sure to check out the At-Home Resource tab for more at-home supports!
Science: This week in Science students looked at helpful ways we can organize data. We organized data about orangutans heights in line plots to help us identify patterns. Students analyzed data and used patterns to predict what future data might be. Thank you to everyone who brought in cardboard - we are very excited to start our projects this week!
Week 6
Math : This week, students focused on equivalent fractions. We looked at different ways we can visually represent equivalent fractions. We used fraction strips and number lines to help show that when fractions are equivalent, they all line up. We also talked about how students can find equivalent fractions by multiplying or dividing both the numerator and denominator by the same numbers. Check out their work below!
Science : This week, students worked together to decide whether evidence cards provided strong or weak evidence. They learned about how when data is more specific, we can notice patterns and begin to make predictions. We have been focusing on rain & precipitation data. Students have been using line plots to notice patterns to help predict which island is going to be the best for our orangutans. Students previewed our wind project on Friday, which we will begin work on on Tuesday!
Week 7
Math: Students engaged with equivalent fractions this week. We spent a lot of time talking about we can use factors and multiples to multiply and divide to get equivalent fractions. We made connections from our previous unit on factors and multiples to help us have some more ease when finding these equivalent fractions. Next week, students will begin to compare and contrast fractions based on size.
Science: Students did a wonderful jobs engaging in the design cycle to create wind measurement tools. Student collaborated with their groups this week to build a tool that would measure the wind speed and direction. They did a great job working together, getting creative and overcoming challenges. I'm so proud of how well they adapted to obstacles. We will continue looking at more data and helping our orangutan friends on finding their best home next week.
Have a wonderful long weekend!
