Mrs. Placido's Bio

Hello families!

This will be my fifth year teaching Kindergarten at Decatur! I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago and have my BS in Early Childhood Education from Miami University, Ohio and MEd in Early Childhood Education with a concentration in English as a Second Language from Erikson Institute. Last year I was awarded an Educator of Excellence award through the Illinois State Board of Education for early career teachers. It was an honor to be nominated and receive the award.

My passion with serving others and education led me to serving in the Peace Corps in the Philippines. During my time there I worked with K-6 students focusing in English and Reading and initiated various community projects. My time there also led me to meet my husband, Luis! Upon returning to Chicago, I worked at Latin School of Chicago in their Junior Kindergarten program before joining the Decatur community.

My favorite thing about teaching young students is being able to witness their incredible social-emotional, and academic growth in the classroom. I feel grateful to be able to cultivate a welcoming and inclusive community of young learners here at Decatur.

When I am not teaching, you can find me spending time with my husband exploring Chicago via our bicycles and spending time outside. I also enjoy reading and cooking various vegetarian meals.

Looking forward to a great year together!

RM 100 enjoyed seeing our 8th Grade Buddies before spring break! We planted seeds together that will go into the school garden as well as made a flower craft that will be displayed in school!
RM 100 has loved learning about the greater than and less than symbols! They enjoyed having some math craft time to use the symbols to compare numbers!

Spelling Review - 2/26

RM 100 did a great job with their spelling review this week! We have reviewed our spelling words for next week that have the -ed ending. Although these words have the -ed ending, we might hear the /d/, /t/ or /ed/ sounds. RM 100 learned a song this week to remind us, you can ask them if they remember the song!

Please see the schedule as to when the lessons will begin, more information was also shared via the Admin Update from Principal Negrón.

Throughout the unit, students will receive optional School to Home Connection activities to support their learning. These activities are not required, but we encourage families to complete them together. These activities can support important conversations between students and their parents or guardians.

If you wish to have your child excused from participation, please inform me in writing or via email by Monday, March 9th, 2026

Spelling Words

We will be having our spelling review this week on Thursday! The class has been doing a nice job practicing our r-controlled vowel sounds /ar/ and /er/ today we learned about the /or/ sound.
RM 100 did an amazing job in the show this week! They showed lots of flexibility with many schedule changes due to show practice, way to go RM 100!
