Mrs. Placido's Bio

Hello families!

This will be my fifth year teaching Kindergarten at Decatur! I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago and have my BS in Early Childhood Education from Miami University, Ohio and MEd in Early Childhood Education with a concentration in English as a Second Language from Erikson Institute. Last year I was awarded an Educator of Excellence award through the Illinois State Board of Education for early career teachers. It was an honor to be nominated and receive the award.

My passion with serving others and education led me to serving in the Peace Corps in the Philippines. During my time there I worked with K-6 students focusing in English and Reading and initiated various community projects. My time there also led me to meet my husband, Luis! Upon returning to Chicago, I worked at Latin School of Chicago in their Junior Kindergarten program before joining the Decatur community.

My favorite thing about teaching young students is being able to witness their incredible social-emotional, and academic growth in the classroom. I feel grateful to be able to cultivate a welcoming and inclusive community of young learners here at Decatur.

When I am not teaching, you can find me spending time with my husband exploring Chicago via our bicycles and spending time outside. I also enjoy reading and cooking various vegetarian meals.

Looking forward to a great year together!

RM 100 had so much fun at Dolphin Dash! Thank you for all the families that supported the event and those who were able to come cheer us on! :)
We have been focusing on how to use self-control (especially if we feel mad or frustrated) when making kind and safe choices! You can review this with your child at home and talk about how they can make a kind and safe choice in the classroom.
The class had fun interviewing Ms. Beard and learned more about how she helps our Decatur community!
This week we learned about how to be Bucket Fillers! As your child what Bucket Fillers are and how they can be a Bucket Filler at home and at school. Make sure to look at our SEL Read Aloud to see book titles that we read this week to support this!

Friday Update!

We were unable to visit the library today due to testing -- students are NOT taking a new library book home today. A few students wanted to keep their library book to read for another week. Books can be brought back next Friday!

We are almost at the end of our first reading unit - Moral of the Story: Fables and Tales. You can read this caregiver update about the stories that we will be reading to finish the unit and how you can continue to support the learning at home.

This week during SEL we read stories and talked about our emotions, there is a new tab on the webpage that will list stories we have read during the week. Feel free to reference it so you can review and read the stories together at home.

Have a nice weekend!

Please help your child to remember to put their library book bag in their backpack tomorrow to bring to library!
