Biography

Ms. Sharping is a highly-qualified teacher with over 20 years of experience and middle school teaching endorsements in reading, math, science, and social studies. As a product of the Chicago Public School system, Ms. Sharping is dedicated to public school education and arts integration. Ms. Sharping graduated summa cum laude from Loyola University Chicago with a degree in Elementary Education. She earned her masters from the American College of Education in Curriculum and Instruction. Her favorite way to teach is through discussion, small group activities and projects. When she is not teaching, she enjoys spending time with her family, painting, and playing competitive tennis.

WK5 | Universe of Obligation

Students discussed and analyzed texts centered around identity and belonging. Our discussions helped us transition into formulating and creating working definitions for the phrase "universe of obligation". Our studies in Social Studies will aim to help students make further connections with their novel study on "Refugee".

WK4 | Social Identity Jigsaw

8th graders worked in small groups to analyze social identity narratives to reflect on the stories we want to tell about who we are and why identity matters.
Prepping for the Lesson | 7th graders journaled and discussed the feelings associated with being part of the "In Crowd" and "Out Crowd" in preparation for a deeper dive into reflections on prejudice and discrimination.
LIBRARY is OPEN! | 6th grade students in Room 103 were able to get into the new Decatur library and begin checking out some books.  Thanks Mrs. Strong for getting some great new books for our students to enjoy!

Week 3 | Big Paper Conversations

Students in 7th and 8th grade engaged in Big Paper Conversations to reflect and think critically about a series of etchings or poems highlighting the artist's perspective on differences and how they are viewed by the individual as well as society.

Week 3 | Mask-Making Preparation & Brainstorming

This week, 6th graders reflected on various resources to discuss why we wear masks and what would happen if we decided to show the world what was behind our masks. As a continuation of our Identity & Community unit, students began brainstorming and drafting ideas for a mask that they will be constructing in some of our upcoming classes.
What Do We Do With a Difference? | Throughout the week 7th graders have been reviewing resources about labels, assumptions, and stereotypes. Students discussed how individuals respond to difference and the impact those responses can have on our identities.
Sketch & Stretch | 8th graders tried a new strategy to engage their thinking.  Students sketched out the meaning of quotes that reflected on identity and the journey to discover who we are. 
Hopes & Concerns | Students in Junior High School shared and discussed their hopes and concerns for the upcoming school year.  A great way to reconnect and build community in the classroom!

Week 2 | Hand Self-Portraits 2021-22

Junior High students spent the first couple of weeks reconnecting with each other in the classroom while reflecting on their individual values and identities through hand self-portraits.
We took a little break and had some Friday Fun! It's interesting trying to direct classmates to draw something you have drawn without giving it away in the directions.
5th Graders took a little trip from our past and reviewed the Silk Road's trading network to help us with our understanding of Ancient China.
7th graders were in deep discussions analyzing political cartoons from the late 19th century to understand our nation's sense of equality.
