Biography

Hi Decatur Family!

My name is Kevin Roper. I have been teaching for the past six years. This is my second year at Decatur! I am originally from Northwest Indiana. I received my Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from Alderson Broaddus University in West Virginia. This summer, I attended SEED seminar focusing on social justice, diversity, and equity.

When I am not teaching you can find me at the lake front trail biking, walking with my dog, reading, or playing volleyball. I am excited to be teaching 1st grade again at Decatur and looking forward to a great year!

It's another exciting time here at Decatur! It's. Book Fair Week next week! Students are able to use E-wallets or cash to purchase new books. We will visit each day Monday-Thursday!

Pohela Boishakh

We had a surprise reader this week. Our reader presented all about Pohela Boishakh, also known as the Bengali New Year. We learned how to create traditional decorations, and listened to our reader speak in Bengali! We had a great time learning all about Pohela Boishakh!

Our secret reading read books all about space. The Mousetraunaut, and Luna Muna. Thank you for spending time with us today! We had a great time discussing space, and getting to know more about you.

Graphing mania: Students analyzed, discussed, and created graphs. After creating graphs students walked around to each table and compared similarities and differences in their graphs and their classmates graphs.

This week our school counselor presented about Autism Awareness. Our students created their stripes and wrote what makes them unique.

Secret reader alert! Our secret reader brought us stories of Indian dance and culture. We read Masala Chai, and Bharathamum Dance. Our students smelled tea leaves, and handled traditional jewelry used in Bharathamum dancing!

This week we discussed capacity, we experienced with water and filling up cups, pints, and quarts. We ended our week by creating a CAPACITY ROBOT!

Our classroom studies plants that were donated to our primary team! They observed, and discussed differences between each plant. They shared out their favorite plant and what they liked about it. Thank you to our donor!

Secret Reader Alert! Our secret readers read to us about Holi today. They brought in power used during the festival and showed us a video of one of our students participating in Holi. Thank you for sharing with us today and spending time with us!

Secret Reader Alert! Today we searched for clues to figure out different instruments in our story. Wild Symphony allowed our students to learn about different instruments, hear different pieces of music and be detectives.
