4th Grade
We had a great week back to school after our break. We began our new novel, The One and Only Ivan. Students used text evidence to describe Ivan based on what he says, does and what other say about him. They also identified figurative language and narrator point of view. We also began Caesar's English, our new vocabulary program. We focused on Latin stems bi, pre, de, super and sub. We practiced analogies and broke down longer words, like superfluous, into parts to help decode meaning. Due to multiple absences we will take the quiz on the 5 Latin stems next week. We began our descriptive writing unit for Writers' Workshop. In Social Studies we began our unit on the Southeast region and how the region affects the rest of the United States.

3rd Grade
The third grade class is back strong after break as well. We are preparing to start our new novel and spent the week working with our new discussion partners. We read a book and discussed vocabulary and comprehension with our assigned partner. We also had minilessons where students practiced listening and speaking with a partner and staying on topic. We learned about Kate DiCamillo who is the author of our next novel, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. In Writers' Workshop we began our research writing project. Students selected an animal to research. This week we focused on habitat, diet and appearance. Eventually we will turn our notes into a multi-paragraph paper. In Science we continued our Balancing Forces unit. The class got a bag of materials and were able to experiment with chain reactions and push and pull force.

3rd Grade Reading - Wednesday (1/22)

K-5 Dance 6:00-8:00 - (2/2)
Dodgeball Tournament - (2/8)

This was a short week but we got a lot done. The 4th grade class read section 2 in One and Only Ivan. We will spend a lot of time thinking more deeply about what the characters are saying and inferring what they mean. We also started drafting our descriptive writing draft about our Ultimate Pet. They were also able to finish their Star 360 reading test and get to the library.

The 3rd grade started their novel The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. This is one of my favorite books and it has been a lot of fun discussing characters and how they react to each other. We are reading and annotating as a class and completing comprehension sheets supporting the novel and skill. This week is was text evidence to support character traits. We also continued research on our animals.

K-5 Dance 6:00-8:00 - (2/2)
Dodgeball Tournament - (2/8)
No School - Students (2/9)

The 4th grade students are continuing their study of The One and Only Ivan. Students focused on making connections and identifying figurative language and what it means. They learned some rich vocabulary during Caesar's English. If you hear your child describe something as prodigious or they reference someone's countenance, those are some of the words we learned. We are also getting ready to finalize our descriptive writing assignments. Students have been using 4 of the 5 senses to describe their ultimate pet. They are incorporating descriptive language and multi-paragraph formatting into their final drafts. In social studies the class is learning the multi-cultural influences in the southeast region.

The 3rd grade students are working with their novel, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane which should take us to the end of the quarter. This week's focus was summarizing key details, cause and effect relationships and character motivation. Students were asked to cite evidence to support their answers. If you have the book at home, I really encourage students not to read ahead. There are so many twists and turns in the story and I don't want students to be tempted to spoil the story. We will also be publishing our animal research writing projects this week. Students have used targeted questions to practice researching a specific topic. They are having a great time becoming experts on their animal. During Science we have been playing with magnets and push/pull/non-touch force.
