Ms. Dare's Biography

Katie Dare grew up in the Philadelphia area.  She got her undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame in Film and Television, and her Masters in Art of Teaching from Clemson University in South Carolina.

Katie has worked in several schools throughout her career teaching a variety of subjects. She specializes in Math and Science and is so excited to be teaching these subjects to the Decatur students!

In addition to being certified to teach all 4 subjects, plus Algebra to middle schoolers, she is both Google and Apple certified as well.

When she's not teaching, Katie can be found walking and playing with her black lab puppy, Alfie, and crafting up a storm.

4th grade students used playing cards to help review for their multi-digit multiplication quiz by competing to see who could put together an expression that would give them the greatest product!
4th grade students were working hard on their Freckle assignments on Multiplying Multi-Digit numbers!  This week they learned 3 different strategies and they were allowed to use whichever strategy helped them best.
Jogathon was a success; my minions looked great!

We came in and worked on some fall themed logic and math puzzles to spend the rest of our time.  We had a great day!
4th graders were given a new mystery part to add to their electrical system.  It took them a little longer to get them to work, but once they did, they realized they were buzzers that created sound energy. Some students went even further and go their fans AND their buzzers to work at the same time.
In 4th grade science, students used a simulation to create electrical systems. I think their favorite part was powering the ball launcher to launch the ball off the page, but this simulation will help students understand how electrical systems work and don't work depending on what is part of the system.
In 5th grade math today, we created "To Go" boxes to practice finding the surface area of objects.  First, students sketched a 3D image, then a net.  Then they put their ideas onto graph paper to make sure it worked.  Finally, they created their To Go containers with construction paper. Oh, and of course they had to find the surface area of their container :)  Students had fun, learned a lot, and were able to get creative.
Today in Science, 5th grade students finished up their Local Weather Exploration by calculating the seasonal data of precipitation and temperature for Chicago.  Students created Climographs and displayed the data in both bar graph and line graph formats on the same scale, really extending their knowledge of reading and creating graphs.
Students got some new flexible seating options today in Math and Science!  Now it's more comfortable to sit on the rug and do work.  Thanks DonorsChoose!
4th grade students sorted expressions that matched how to find the volume of various rectangular prisms.  I snuck a few expressions in there that wouldn't work to try and trick them, but they were too clever and figured it out pretty quickly, making a "does not fit" category :)

Star 360

Hi Parents -
Just a heads up that Star360 Testing is this week.  4th and 5th grade students will take the math assessment on Wednesday, September 6th.
