Mr. Goldner Bio

Hello families! My name is Sean Goldner and I will be the 5th Grade Homeroom teacher and the 3rd Grade and 5th grade Math and Science teacher at Decatur this year!

I graduated from Indiana University with a Bachelor's degree in elementary education with a license in technology integration. This is my 10th year teaching math and science in Chicago. I taught three years at an alternative school for students with diverse needs,  five years of math and science in CPS in the Austin Neighborhood, and this will be my second year at Decatur! I live in the North Center neighborhood of Chicago and enjoy watching scary movies, reading and going to concerts! I have a rescue dog named Tater Tot.

Favorite Color: Black

Favorite Team: Indiana Hoosiers

Favorite Activities: Scary Movies, Concerts and Reading!

Favorite Food: Peanut Butter M+M’s

Biggest Fear: Heights

Favorite Drink: Coffee

Favorite Book: The Wild Robot

Favorite Movie: The Lego Movie

CLASSROOM

My goal for my classroom is for students to feel safe and heard. I like to focus on SEL to help students learn skills to navigate social situations that pop up in the classroom. I like to tell my students “We are all humans who are trying to do their best”. I practice that by showing my students my own mistakes and how I have overcome them.

MATH

In math, my focus is on productive struggle. I like to focus on the idea that math is a process that takes time to practice and hone our skills. Just like practicing a skill in a sport or a craft, math is also a skill that takes practice and struggle to understand.

SCIENCE

In science, my goal is to fan the flame of curiosity for my students. Science is a great tool to help us understand the world around us. By posing high quality questions we can use the scientific method to answer them.
