00:19 Science| Modeling Plant and Animal Structures
Students used their materials to model how a plant or animal's structure can be a defense against predators. They used: clay, a comb, toothpicks, tissue paper, pencil eraser tops and a cup. So fun to see the creativity and inspiration students drew from our science text, Spikes, Spines and Shells: A Handbook of Defenses.

3:57 Week 1 of 2022-23: Grades 5 & 6 Science Classes
For the 1st week back to school, in science class students participated in some community building team challenges to welcome everyone back, welcome our new classmates who are new to Decatur, and set the stage for working in cooperative groups in Science class this year! Each student also completed an Interest Inventory/Survey so that Mr. K can get to know each of them as unique and valuable members of our Science class learning community! Please ask your child all about it and thank you for checking in with us this week:)

4:12 Week 4 of 2022-23: JHS Science
This week's slideshow highlights: a special visit from Decatur alumni who stopped by during last Saturday's Decatur Picnic to visit their old friend, our class pet bearded dragon, Curtiss; 5th grade students making observations and asking questions about those mysterious beads that turn colors when they went outside in sunlight; 5th and 6th grade students diving into their first SEPUP Inquiry Units by participating in a group textbook scavenger hunt to learn how to make use of all science textbook features/resources; 6th - 8th grade classes adding their initial inquiry questions to our class "Driving Questions Board"; 8th grade students volunteering to share their analysis responses in front of the class on a lesson on measuring speed; 7th grade students learning how to use compound light microscopes, a stereoscope, and digital microscopes to view microorganisms as part of their SEPUP inquiry unit "From Cells to Organisms; several pics of students hanging out with Curtiss; a few pics of our classroom Lake Michigan aquatic ecosystem with our newly added catfish; and a couple of pics of a Katydid students discovered right outside our school building. Thank you for checking in with us this week:)

00:13 3rd Grade Science Songbird activity Featured
This week students learned more about animal traits and used this to compare different birds. After looking at several birds we also listened to their singing and calls to decide whether they were songbirds or not. In the activity students stood up if they thought it was a songbird after hearing the sound of each bird.

1:13 3rd Science Celery Investigation Featured
Students created an investigation using celery, food coloring and water to test how inherited traits can be impacted by the environment. In groups, students planned out different experiments to conduct that had only one variable to increase the validity of the results

4:33 Week 15 of 2022-23| 5th-8th Grade Science
This week's slideshow highlights: 5th grade students teaching the class their data collection, analysis, and interpretation skills as they investigated monthly average temperature and precipitation data for Chicago as part of their SEPUP Unit. Weather & Climate; 6th grade students setting up their cooperative group green roof experiments by planting cover crop seeds for their green roof designs; 7th and 8th grade researchers presenting their STEM Fair Projects to their fellow classmates while their classmates also supported them with "Glows & Grows" during the scientific peer review process that all scientists practice before they can publish their research and discoveries. Science & Engineering topics that students chose to explore included a variety of STEM disciplines such as: microbial fuel cells that use soil microbes to produce electricity; oil skimmer boat designs to cleanup oil spills; effect of temperature on maglev train performance; effect of LED lights on sleep; Midwest farming methods' impact on aquatic nitrates that can travel downstream through rivers such as the Mississippi and lead to ocean dead zones in distant locations like the Gulf of Mexico; rabbit manure as an alternative source of fertilizer; miracle berries impact on taste receptors as a form of dieting for people suffering from diabetes; and many more exciting and innovative ideas our students challenged themselves to investigate! Thank you for checking in with us this week:)
