3:37 Week 18 of 2022-23|5th-8th Grade Science
This week's slideshow highlights: 5th grade investigating the ratio of water to land on Earth, as well as how water and land absorb and lose thermal energy at different rates as part of their SEPUP Weather & Climate Unit; 6th grade investigated the scientific theory of "Continental Drift" as part of their SEPUP Unit Geologic Processes; 7th grade wrapped up their SEPUP Unit From Cells to Organisms with an interactive activity called "Disease Detectives", where they worked as epidemiologists to argue from evidence the cause of a disease outbreak, and 7th grade also played team Jeopardy to review for the unit's culminating final exam; 8th graders continue digging deeper into their SEPUP Unit Chemistry of Materials, with a cooperative group lab that investigated chemical vs physical properties, and they also began exploring the property of density through an online Phet Simulation. 1:58 WK5 | Universe of Obligation
Students discussed and analyzed texts centered around identity and belonging. Our discussions helped us transition into formulating and creating working definitions for the phrase "universe of obligation". Our studies in Social Studies will aim to help students make further connections with their novel study on "Refugee".

1:02 4th grade Chicago History Field Trip Featured
Students went on a field trip to the Chicago History Museum to be a part of their special City on Fire Enhanced Field Trip. Students heard from live actors about two famous Chicagoans, Joseph and Anna Elizabeth Hudlin, who both played pivotal roles in helping Chicago recover from the Chicago Fire. Students also got to meet Chicago comic Victor Dandridge, who showed them how the medium of a simple thing like folded paper can help add layers to a story.

00:13 4th grade Straw Reeds Lab Featured
Students have been learning about sound waves and investigating what makes sounds different like volume and pitch. To see this an action students used straws to create reeds to could make different sounds based upon the way they were crafted. We analyzed the sounds and identified what we were hearing.

5th graders wrote bio-poems expressing who they are, what they love, and their hopes and dreams. It was a great way to get to know one another, celebrate each student's individuality, and build community.

1:01 Gallery Walk
6th and 7th grade classes used our Gallery Walk activity to review primary resources for each of our units of study. 6th looked at various resources from maps and first hand accounts bearing witness to the tragedies of the Holocaust. 7th graders looked at resources analyzing slavery as an institution of power.
