This is the graph we created from our activity How much water is in the world? that shows the difference between saltwater and freshwater around the world.  Students were blown away to find that the amount of saltwater is so many times the amount of freshwater.

Can you save Fred? Challenge-4th Grade

This week students took on the challenge to try to save Fred- the gummy worm capsized at sea. Fred was stuck on top of his capsized boat with his life preserver underneath. Students worked together to plan and conduct saving Fred. In order to accomplish this, they needed to find a way to turn over his boat, put on Fred's life preserver (a gummy life saver), and put Fred back in his boat. The only tools that students could use were paper clips to move all the objects.
Students created posters displaying different aspects of their identity through various artistic means and included as part of their identity that they are Mathematicians.  I am working to instill in students that they belong in the community of mathematicians.  This is the collage created as a result of this project that is outside our classroom.
In Math this week students worked with their table groups on the 4 fours.  In this activity they needed  to find a solution for each number 1-20 with the expression using any operation and four number 4's.

For example,

1= 4/4+4-4  or

11= 4!+4!-4/4
