Ms. Powell's Bio

Ms. Powell teaches Kindergarten and is excited to join the Decatur community! She grew up in the suburbs of Chicago and holds her BS in Early Childhood Education from Miami University, Ohio and has her MEd in Early Childhood Education with a concentration in English as a Second Language from Erikson Institute.
Prior to Decatur, Ms. Powell worked at Latin School of Chicago in their Junior Kindergarten program and served in the Peace Corps in the Philippines as an Elementary teacher. During her time in the Philippines, Ms. Powell worked with students K-6 focusing in English and Reading, and initiated various community projects. Ms. Powell is passionate about early childhood and feels grateful to witness the social-emotional, and academic growth that her young students make in the classroom.
Outside of the classroom, Ms. Powell enjoys spending time outside walking along the lakefront, reading, traveling and spending time with family and friends.

In math this week we talked about number representation and all the ways we can show numbers.
During reading this week, we talked about Visualizing and how it can help us comprehend stories. You can ask your Kindergartener what visualizing means, and we talked how it is like watching a movie in your mind! We read A Bad Case of Stripes by David Shannon and practiced our visualizing skills by drawing what we think is happening after listening to the story.
