Weekly Updates 2022-2023

Week 35 May 15 -May 19, 2023




6th & 7th graders

The students worked on reading the Diary of Anne Frank Act 1 scenes 4 and 5 and Act 2 scenes 1 and 2. They are still reading Act 2 next week and also worked on their playwright groups. Have a great weekend!

8th graders 

The students read Macbeth and also worked on their playwright groups. 8th graders have a great trip next week! Have a great weekend!

Week 30 of April 10-April 14, 2023



6th grade 

The sixth graders read Act 1 scene 1 and 2 of the adapted play of Diary of Anne Frank. They also wrote an essay about two characters. The sixth graders began learning about William Shakespeare and read Sonnet 18. They will write an English sonnet next week. 

7th grade

The 7th graders revised and edited their argumentative essay and completed their last book discussion on Refugee. They had their essay celebration today and shared one thing they learned from their peers’ essays. 

8th grade

The eighth graders completed their last discussion on Chains and also took an assessment. They revised and edited their slavery essay and had their celebration in the hallway. Today they began their first poetry lesson.

6th, 7th, and 8th graders 

This week the middle schoolers wrapped up their current novels and will begin reading a play and poetry. Have a happy spring break!

6th, 7th, and 8th graders 

This week the middle schoolers took their IAR assessments on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. On Friday the students revised and edited their box and bullets and worked on their novel assignments.

6th, 7th, and 8th graders 

This week the middle schoolers worked on storyboards for their novels. They also worked with a peer in writing an essay and creating their own rubric for it as well. Please know that they take the IAR assessment next week starting March 21st-March 23rd. Please provide your child with a healthy breakfast and remind them to rest early. Week 26 of March 6-March 10, 2023



6th grade 

The sixth graders had a classic literature book review celebration and had the opportunity to do a gallery walk in the hallway. They read and provided their peers with compliments about their book reviews. They also completed their novel and are ready to publish their Holocaust essay next week. Have a great weekend!

7th grade

The 7th graders also had a classic literature book review celebration and had the opportunity to do a gallery walk in the hallway as well. They read and provided their peers with compliments about their book reviews. The 7th graders are halfway through Refugee and are completing storyboards for the chapters. They will have their discussion on Monday. They will continue to work on their argumentative essay. Have a great weekend!

8th grade

The eighth graders had their gallery walk in the classroom. They read and provided their peers with compliments about their book reviews. They completed their storyboard for 10 chapters and will have their discussion on Monday about the novel Chains. They are also working on their informative essay about their chosen slavery topic. Week 25 of February 27-March 3, 2023



6th grade 

The sixth graders completed their last discussion for chapters 18-20 of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. They began the movie in order to compare and contrast the characters and themes of the novel. The students completed their classic literature novel they chose to read and wrote a book review. They studied a student mentor text to guide them in writing their book review. They will revise and edit on Tuesday. 

7th grade

The 7th graders had another novel discussion and they also completed their classic literature novel they chose to read and wrote a book review. They studied a student mentor text to guide them in writing their book review. They will revise and edit on Monday. 

8th grade

The eighth graders completed their storyboard on Chains chapters 16-25. They had another novel discussion and also completed their classic literature novel they chose to read and wrote a book review. They studied a student mentor text to guide them in writing their book review. They will revise and edit on Monday. 

Week 24 of February 21-February 24, 2023



6th grade 

The sixth graders completed their annotations for chapters 18-20 of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. They also wrote their introduction and conclusion to their Holocaust essay and revised their evidence log with a partner. The students analyzed one another's evidence and reasoning and provided constructive feedback. Have a great weekend!

7th grade

The seventh graders learned about counterarguments for their argumentative essay. They also completed a discussion, read their classic novel in order to complete their book review, and worked on their box and bullets for their essay. Have a great weekend!

8th grade

The eighth graders continued reading Chains chapters 16-25. They have a choice of a storyboard or annotations. We also reviewed the comprehension questions for the Thomas Paine article. They also completed a mini lesson about analyzing literature. 8th grade worked on their box and bullets for their informative essay. Have a great weekend!

Week 23 of February 13-February 17, 2023



6th grade 

The sixth graders began their discussion for chapters 15-17 of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. They practiced writing a strong introduction with a partner regarding social media and had the opportunity to choose the hook they wanted to use and combine in order to grab their reader’s attention. The students also read an article and answered comprehension questions as well in order to practice finding evidence in a text. They took their lesson 6 vocabulary assessment. Have a great weekend!

7th grade

The seventh graders completed their MUN debate. They shared their country’s policies and debated solutions to the topic. The students practiced appropriate decorum and listening skills during the debate. They practiced writing a strong introduction with a partner regarding social media and had the opportunity to choose the hook they wanted to use and combine in order to grab their reader’s attention. The students also read an article and answered comprehension questions as well in order to practice finding evidence in a text. They took their lesson 12 vocabulary assessment. Have a great weekend!

Week 22 of February 6-February 10, 2023



6th grade 

The sixth graders completed their discussion for chapters 11- 14 of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. Each student thought of two higher order thinking questions to discuss with their table partners. The students continued to research their Holocaust topic they chose and input their evidence in their evidence log. They also worked with their table partners to highlight the parts of a great introduction in informative writing. They also took their lesson 5 vocabulary assessment. 

7th grade

The seventh graders revised and edited with two partners this week their MUN essay. They reviewed the checklist and provided constructive feedback with one wonder and two compliments. The seventh graders completed their seventh Refugee novel discussion and began their whole group debate. Each student began stating their country name and read about their refugee and immigration policies/laws. We will continue to debate this week on how to help solve the world’s refugee crisis. 7th grade will soon begin their topic of choice argumentative essays. 

8th grade

The eighth graders began reading Chains and completed their chapters 1-4 novel discussions. The students also chose their informative essay topic regarding slavery and will begin their research this upcoming week. They took their lesson 11 vocabulary assessment and are working on a storyboard for chapters 5-15 of Chains.

6th grade 

The sixth graders continued to research the Holocaust topic they chose and input their evidence in their evidence log. They also did an amazing job in the show and silently read their classic novels. 

7th grade

The seventh graders published their MUN essay. They also did an amazing job in the show and silently read their classic novels.

8th grade

The eighth graders began reading their new novel Chains. They also did an amazing job in the show and silently read their classic novels.

6th grade 

The sixth graders completed their reading and annotations for chapter 11 and 12 of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. The students continued to research the Holocaust topic they chose and input their evidence in their evidence log. They also learned how to write a claim/thesis statement and practiced how to identify different types of essay hooks with their partners. Have a great weekend! 

7th grade

The seventh graders completed another table discussion about their novel Refugee. They completed their reading and annotations for pages 93-109. They also took their assessment on pages 56-109. They received a position paper student mentor text and continued to research their country's policies regarding refugees. They received their published MUN essay template and are working diligently to publish their essay by next Tuesday. Have a great weekend!

8th grade

The eighth graders completed their published argumentative essay on To Kill a Mockingbird. The students were randomly divided into two teams and judges. The judges received a rubric in order to assess the two teams' argument. Team B, not to ban the novel, won! Both sides did a great job providing evidence and reasoning. The students also received their new novel, Chains. Have a great weekend!

Week 19 of January 17-January 20, 2023



6th grade 

The sixth graders completed their reading and annotations for chapter 9 and 10 of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. They also took their lesson 4 vocabulary test and their winter star 360 assessment. The students received their evidence log and began researching their topic about the Holocaust. Have a great weekend! 

7th grade

The seventh graders completed another table discussion about their novel Refugee. They completed their annotations and took their lesson 10 vocabulary assessment. They received their MUN position paper template and began transferring information from their other two assignments into their final draft. The students also took their winter star 360 assessment. 8th grade

The eighth graders completed their To Kill a Mockingbird introduction and conclusion. They peer reviewed their box, bullets, and counterargument. They shared sources and gave their partner constructive feedback. They began publishing their essay, which is due Monday and took their lesson 10 vocabulary assessment. The students also took their winter star 360 assessment. Have a great weekend!

6th, 7th, & 8th will take their reading STAR 360 exam next week Thursday, January 19, 2023.

6th grade 

Welcome back! They created a brand new smart goal for the third quarter and designed a one wallpaper word for 2023. The sixth graders did a great job discussing chapter 8 of the Boy in the Striped Pajamas. They completed their annotations and took their lesson 3 vocabulary assessment. The students also completed their works cited #2 practice. They practiced how to cite a website, encyclopedia, and a book. Have a great weekend!

7th grade

Welcome back! They created a brand new smart goal for the third quarter and shared a highlight during circle time. The seventh graders did a great job discussing their fourth section of Refugee. They completed their annotations and took their lesson 9 vocabulary assessment. They continued their MUN research on their country and are completing the works cited as well. Have a great weekend!

Welcome back! The eighth graders created a brand new smart goal for the third quarter and completed their To Kill a Mockingbird graphic organizer with their first and second reason. They also completed their counterargument as well by following the formula and transition words. They began completing their introduction and conclusion for their essay. The sixth graders reviewed how to paraphrase using five steps and write an in text citation in MLA format. They practiced organizing three sources on a works cited page for their future research paper. They began annotating their chapter 9 and completing their vocabulary three choice board activity. 7th grade

6th grade 

The sixth graders received a third revising and editing checklist for their fiction story. They will review their story and label all of their literary devices and figurative language. They also received a sheet where they will choose their Holocaust research topic for our next unit regarding essay writing. They also had their seventh novel discussion with their table partners about, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. The students also had two mini lessons about sources in informative writing. They also compared and contrasted MLA versus APA format.The students started a summarizing, paraphrasing, and quoting mini lesson, which will continue next week. Have a great day!

The students also began reviewing the summarizing, paraphrasing, and quoting mini lesson, which will continue next week. The eighth graders received a third revising and editing checklist for their fiction story. They will review their story and label all of their literary devices and figurative language. The students also had two mini lessons about sources in informative writing. They worked on a study guide to complete pages 206-273 in order to complete their graphic novel To Kill A Mockingbird. They began working on their argumentative essay about banning or not banning To Kill A Mockingbird in schools. They began their research and will continue this week. Have a great day!

Week 15 of December 5-December 9, 2022

 
6th, 7th, and 8th grade had a busy week filled with lots of learning and celebrations. They revised and edited their stories with a partner, they learned the criteria of an author page, and how to write a great book blurb about their story. They had the opportunity to read author pages from novelists and read their book blurbs that hook their readers into reading and buying their stories. The students then followed the rubric and created their own author page and book blurb about their stories. Today, December 9th, the middle school students had their Publishing Party! They read one another’s incredible stories and also wrote down compliments. Our middle school dance will be December 22nd. More details will come. Have a great weekend!

The students also turned and shared their possible themes to their stories. They focused on building their writing stamina this week and are completing their fictional stories for our publishing gallery walk next Friday. The sixth graders also took their vocabulary lesson two assessment. They also had their Chapter 6 novel discussion with their table partners  and quiz on chapters 1-6 this week. The six graders had a mini lesson regarding the three types of flashback and reviewed three mentor texts. They incorporated flashbacks in their stories and had the opportunity to revise and edit their fictional stories with a partner. We also had a great bowling field trip in order to build community! 

7th grade

The six graders had their fifth novel discussion with their table partners about, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. The six graders also had an imagery discussion with photos. They had to use their 5 senses and write 3 sentences describing what they see, hear, smell, taste, and feel. Then they incorporated that skill into their fictional stories. Have a great weekend!

They conducted their first Refugee novel discussion and also had an imagery discussion with photos. The students focused on writing the beginning of their fictional stories. They also had mini lessons on when to start a new paragraph in narratives. They realized that great writers use a variety of leads to create a specific type of tone and mood. The 6th graders also began choosing their first vocabulary list. Have a great weekend!

The seventh graders began typing their March book review. The book review essay will contain a summary, pros, cons, and conclusion. They studied other leads from famous authors and discussed the different types of leads they used to start their novels. The eighth graders read the next thirty-four pages of To Kill A Mockingbird and had a great discussion today. They also studied other leads from famous authors and discussed the different types of leads they used to start their novels. They realized that great writers use a variety of leads to create a specific type of tone and mood. The students also began creating plot diagrams and character charts for their fiction story. They also took a photo of a great hook/lead share with their table partners. Next week we will identify the different types of hooks author’s create in order to create a particular tone and mood in stories.

They also learned the different types of sentence structures: simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex. The students received their novel, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas and received a bookmark with annotation sentence starters to help them complete their chapter 1 annotations. All of the middle school students were introduced to their fiction story pacing guide. They are able to choose from any subgenre and begin their creative stories. They are excited! The six graders learned nine different types of pronouns: personal, possessive, indefinite, interrogative, relative, reflexive, intensive, demonstrative, and reciprocal. The students viewed a short film for each, took notes, turned and shared examples with a partner, and wrote 2-3 examples of each. They also revised and edited their “Birthday Box” paragraph with a partner and turned in their final published piece. 

7th grade

They also learned nine different types of pronouns: personal, possessive, indefinite, interrogative, relative, reflexive, intensive, demonstrative, and reciprocal. 6th grade 

The six graders completed and reviewed the nine different types of pronouns: personal, possessive, indefinite, interrogative, relative, reflexive, intensive, demonstrative, and reciprocal for their weekly assessment with a peer. The students also reread “Seventh Grade” by Gary Soto and completed annotations, and a plot mountain graphic organizer. They also identified the theme of the story and published their theme paragraph. Today they revised and edited their paragraph with a partner and gave constructive feedback.

7th grade

The seventh graders are reading the graphic novel March and annotated pages 58-74. They had great novel discussions again with their table partners. They also reviewed with a peer the nine different types of pronouns: personal, possessive, indefinite, interrogative, relative, reflexive, intensive, demonstrative, and reciprocal for their weekly assessment. The students also reviewed characterization. They identified a character’s trait and began writing a claim, evidence, and reasoning paragraph. 

8th grade

Week 5 of September 19-23, 2022



6th grade 

The six graders this week reread with a partner “Birthday Box” in order to identify the theme. They found the lesson to be learned and wrote a claim, two pieces of evidence, and two reasonings to support their claim. They also published their theme paragraph using the MLA format. They also received the nine different types of pronouns and explorer rubric. They will continue to have mini lessons on each type this upcoming week.

7th grade

The seventh graders are reading the graphic novel March and annotated pages 18-39 in order to have a book club discussion. They created their own discussion club questions and wrote a summary for each question to help them slow down and listen to their peers. Week 4 of September 12-16, 2022

 

6th, 7th, and 8th Grade took their beginning of year STAR 360 on Wednesday, September 14, 2022.

 

In reading the 6th graders read “Birthday Box” by Jane Yolen and completed a plot graphic organizer. They identified the exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution with a partner. The 7th and 8th graders continued to annotate their graphic novels identifying figurative language, conflict, and character traits. We began our first vocabulary unit and continued our grammar lessons on possessive nouns. Have a great weekend!

6th grade-This week we were able to receive and pass out our 'All About Me' feedback from our gallery walk. The students did an excellent job complimenting and asking their peers extended questions. They also began taking notes on plot and annotated a short story. They will continue to annotate the text in order to have a discussion next week. Have a great weekend!
 
7th & 8th grade-This week they received their Wordly Wise differentiated lists to begin their first vocabulary choice assignment. They continued to explore different types of nouns. The students also studied a student's annotations with a rubric in order to better comprehend the text.They continued to read their graphic novels and identified a variety of literary terms. In ELA, the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students began their ‘All About Me’ gallery walk. They wrote and passed out feedback about what they learned about one another. They also wrote questions and compliments. They had the opportunity to collaborate and answer questions. The students also continued their grammar skills of different types of nouns and began to explore their new graphic novels. They were grouped in teams to explore their graphic novel terms in order to comprehend the essential question of how we read graphic novels? 
Week 1 Welcome Back to School!

The students have been creating their own classroom norms and reviewing the classroom procedures by playing charades. The students also shared their North-(needs), South-(suggestions), East-(excitements), and West-(worries) for the upcoming school year. They participated in a parts of speech scavenger hunt with a partner and created an 'All About Me' presentation for Mondays gallery walk. I look forward to reading them. Have a great weekend!
