Week 18-January 8-12, 2024



6th grade

The students completed their new novel 50 annotations. They learned the 4 types of simple sentences and worked on their story. They incorporated a variety of sentence lengths for cadence. The students also shared their inspirational quotes for the new year. They had the opportunity to rank their topics for their Holocaust research essay.

7th, & 8th grade

The students had their theme essay gallery walk. They wrote down what they learned from one another and shared their inspirational quotes for the new year. They incorporated a variety of sentence lengths for cadence in their stories.

Week 17-December 18-21, 2023



6th grade

The students revised and edited summaries. They wrote their climax to their fiction stories. They worked on their vocabulary 4 lesson, and the test will be the Tuesday they return. Have an amazing break and Happy Holidays!

7th, & 8th grade

Week 16-December 11-15, 2023



6th grade

The students wrote a summary on the first fifty pages of their new novels. They were taught a climax mini lesson and also worked on their climax in their narratives. They also revised and edited their summary with a partner. Have a great weekend!

7th, & 8th grade

Week 15-December 4-8, 2023



6th grade 

The students worked together in their novel groups writing a plot mountain about their first novel. The students also ranked their second novels and began reading 50 pages in order to write a summary. They also completed their rising action in their narratives. Please ask your child how their story is coming along. Thank you!

7th grade

The students completed their theme graphic organizers and revised and edited them with a partner. They will combine all the components into one literary theme essay in order to have a gallery walk. They also completed their rising action in their narratives. Please ask your child how their story is coming along. The students also received their new novels and began reading them in order to complete a summary. Thank you! 

8th grade

The students revised and edited their character traits’ paragraph and had a discussion with their novel groups. The students also reviewed basic punctuation rules and began annotating their novels again in order to have a book club discussion next week. Have a great weekend!

Week 6-September 25-29, 2023



6th grade 

The students learned the four types of sentence structures and common mistakes made in grammar. They read aloud with their novel groups in order to identify a character trait from a chosen character in their novel. They are writing a character analysis paragraph independently, so they can revise and edit them with a partner next week. 6th grade will start their vocab #1 list next week.  

7th grade

The sixth graders completed their storyboards regarding their chosen novels and reviewed the 4 types of sentence structures. They will have their novel discussions on Monday. 

7th grade

The 7th graders completed their storyboards regarding their chosen novels and reviewed the 4 types of sentence structures. They will have their novel discussions on Monday. 

8th grade

The eighth graders completed their storyboards regarding their chosen novels and reviewed the 4 types of sentence structures. They will have their novel discussions on Monday. They also completed a shared reading to practice comprehension strategies.

The sixth graders completed their summaries regarding their chosen pages in their novels and revised and edited them with a peer before their discussions.

7th grade

The 7th graders completed their summaries regarding their chosen pages in their novels and revised and edited them with a peer before their discussions. They are also working on their vocabulary strategies for their assessments.

8th grade

The eighth graders completed their summaries regarding their chosen pages in their novels and revised and edited them with a peer before their discussions. They are also working on their vocabulary strategies for their assessments.

WEEK 3-September 5-8, 2023




6th, 7th, & 8th graders

This week we completed the digital citizenship lessons and the students took their STAR reading assessment. All of the classes also continued reading and annotating their book club novels. Some groups were able to start their novel discussions in class. Have a great weekend!

WEEK 2-August 28 -September 1, 2023




6th, 7th, & 8th graders

The students worked on ranking their book club novels and received their novels. They began reading and annotating in class. They also read their peers’ paragraphs about the stickers they chose that represent them during their gallery walk. Have a wonderful Labor Day weekend!

Week 1 
 
This week in ELA the students had an opportunity to decorate a paper water bottle with three to four stickers that represent who they are. They wrote a paragraph about the stickers  and had the opportunity to revise and edit them with a partner. The students also worked together in brainstorming our classroom norms and collaborated in team building activities. The students are looking forward to learning more about their peers through our All About Me gallery walk next week. 
-Friendly Reminder: Appropriate Dress for Students: We don’t have a dress code at Decatur, but we do ask that students save head wear for outside (except for religious purposes), and that students wear appropriate footwear for outdoor activities. They need to have close-toed shoes for recess, PE, etc.
