Weekly Updates SY 23-24

Social Emotional Learning
  • This week we talked about how we can be time savers in the classroom. We can do this by practicing to listen the first time, being proactive, cleaning up quickly and having a ready line when it is time to leave the classroom. Saving time ensures that we are spending the most time learning and have time at the end of the day for fun activities like choice time!
  • Students also participated in a talking circle about body awareness. They shared their favorite way to greet a friend and how they feel when someone invades their space, or does not have consent to touch them. Lots of responses were it makes them feel uncomfortable, frustrated or sad. We want to be respectful of others space and stop when they ask us to!

Math
  • This week we continued to focus on subtracting within 100. Students practiced using different strategies and number bonds to help them solve problems!
  • The class enjoyed ending the week with some math activities! We played race to 100, the three dice game, roll & add and did some tang math challenges.

Literacy
  • During foundational skills we learned that -kn makes the /n/ sound and -wh makes the /w/ sound. Both of these spellings have a silent letter so it can be tricky to remember the spelling!
  • In writing rotations students started their animal research books, worked on word sorts, practiced their handwriting and spelling by making picnic sentences and worked on reading fluency!
  • We finished our Goldilocks and the Three Bears book study by reading Abuelo and the Three Bears. Students enjoyed reading he different Goldilocks versions and comparing/contrasting them together!

Social Studies | Science
  • In social studies we learned all about community helpers this week!
  • During science we talked about how things get warmer during the day as the sun is out longer. The class also learned that darker objects absorb more heat which makes them hotter to touch during warm days (compared to objects that are pale or lighter in color).
RM 100 had a great week of learning, it was so fun to see families at STEM Night!

At the end of May (5/29) the class will be taking a walking field trip to Indian Boundary Park! If you would like to come chaperone, you must be an approved Level 1 volunteer. If you would like your status changed, email Ms. Doggett ([email protected]) to be changed to a Level 1. Then, you will need to finish what is required from Volunteer Services. Here is the contact information as well: [email protected] or 773-553-1544. I would recommend doing this sooner than later so you can be approved in time if you want to join!

Appropriate Dress for Students: We don’t have a dress code at Decatur, but we do ask that students save head wear for outside (except for religious purposes), and that students wear appropriate footwear for outdoor activities. They need to have close-toed shoes for recess, PE, etc.

Social Emotional Learning
  • This week we read A Little Spot of Patience by Diane Alber. We learned why patience can be important and how we can grow our patience spots!
  • Ms. Cross visited the classroom and read the story Milo's Monster. This story was about when the feeling of jealousy can appear if a good friend might start to play or spend time with a new friend. Sometimes we might also feel anger and sadness towards that friend because they aren't spending as much time with us anymore. A good fix could be to share your feelings with the friend, and ask if you can all play together!

It is recommended that you set up an e-wallet for your child so you do not have to worry about sending money to school, anyone can contribute to the e-wallet. Families may create an E-WALLET for their students for cash-free shopping here.

Our fair is also online, and books can be purchased by families, teachers, and staff, and delivered to the school if there isn't enough time to shop during the week of book fair. The fair will be live, until May 2, 2024. See the e-flyer.

    • Student's learned about respecting one another's personal space. We reviewed behaviors that we may like, not like, or sometimes like (or what is only appropriate for home with our families - kissing/tickling). Students learned that they need to ask consent before giving a hug, high-five, etc. because some people might not like those things.
  • Lesson 5 | Surprises vs. Tell Secrets
    • During this lesson, we learned that a surprise is when something happens and we didn't know it was going to happen. Some surprises are kept secret at first. Good surprises are information, events or things in which all people are safe and no one is being hurt. When we have to Tell Secrets is an unsafe secret in which someone is getting hurt or could be hurt. For Tell Secrets a trusted adult needs to be told. Students identified trusted adults in their home and in school who they can tell if something unsafe is happening to them. We listened to the story Some Secrets Should Never be Kept by Jayneen Sanders to understand you should always tell a trusted adult if someone is doing something inappropriate to you.

Social Emotional Learning
  • This week we read the book A Little Spot of Flexible Thinking. This Spot book helped us understand to think like a palm tree because palm trees are bendable and move with the flow when there is change. Flexible thinking helps us when there is a toy/item that we want to play with that is broken or being used. Big emotions may come up if we cannot have it right away, but flexible thinking helps us think about another choice that may be available while we wait. Students enjoyed listening to this song to understand flexible thinking more!

Math
  • Our math focus this week was about picture graphs and data! We had an integrated unit this week with Mr. Cherry in PE class. During PE, students thought of categories they could collect data with. In groups, they collected data by making tally charts, then in math they worked with their groups to turn the data into picture graphs. Students did a great job collaborating with their groups!

  • Students participated in a talking circle this week where they shared something that has "bugged" them at school. A lot of students shared that it bugs them when they say stop and their classmate does not stop. (if they are bothering them, touching them, etc.) We went over this as a class and reiterated the importance to stop when someone asks them to stop. This would be great to review with your child!

We also had our MOY iReady testing begin. Students completed their Math iReady this week and will do Reading next week. These results will be shared to families when they are finalized.

Next week students will be participating in an OSP training. More information about this training was shared via Principal Negrón's weekly update.

  • We read the book Penguin Problems which reminded us that sometimes when we complain about things or think about the negative, we also need to remind ourselves what we are grateful for and we can still think positively!

Math

  • During science we played a game called "rugball" which made us think about the force that we are using with our hands to move the ball in the circle. We also looked at pictures of objects moving and visualized if the object was being pushed or pulled and what was making it move.
We had a great week back together after winter break! We ended the week with a visit to our 8th Grade Buddies and had a fun time making a New Year hat with them!
