Ms. Manon's Bio

About Me

The 2026-2027 school year will be my 13th year teaching. I received a Bachelors Degree in Theater from Illinois State University. After working at Universal Studios Creative and EMI Music in Los Angeles, I returned to Chicago where I received my Masters in Education at the University of Illinois-Chicago. 
 
After graduating, I worked at Pritzker Elementary teaching the gifted first grade class for 9 years. I also worked as the Gifted Coordinator for the school. I love teaching novels and writers' workshop as part of a balanced literacy program. This will be my fourth year teaching at Decatur Classical. 
 
When I am not at work I love competing in trivia nights, watching any Chicago sports team, reading, attending comedy shows and hanging out with my handsome cat, Jake.

26-27 Battle of the Books Flyer

Your child will be bringing home this flyer for Battle of the Books! Please read through it and see if your child would be interested in joining the team. Ms. Case will be coaching this year. 
 
Included is a BOTB Sign Up form. 
 
If your child has questions, please have them write down their question and bring it in on Tuesday for Ms. Case. She is in our room from 9:00-10:00 and will be able to answer any questions they might have about BOTB. 
5th Grade examining soil samples to answer the question, "why aren't Cecropia trees growing and thriving in the ecosystem project area?" 
4th Graders sharing their presentation about a "Chicago Exhibit in the Smithsonian" using primary and secondary resources. 

What's in a Name?

On Monday 4th grade students will begin ELA with a free write about the origin of their name. It can be about first, middle, last, nickname or any combination. They may ask you how their name was chosen or does it have special meaning. 
 
Example: my dad got to choose my name because he was in Vietnam when my older sister was born. My mom chose a name he didn't like, so he got to pick mine. My first name is just a common name, but my middle name is the same as my grandma's first name, my aunt's first name and my mom's middle name. 

Practicing our routines by lining up in order of the steps. Students were not able to talk or use their fingers to show the number of the step. They practiced non-verbal communication skills.
