December Updates
Week of December 2nd-6th
Three weeks of school before Winter Break
During Language Arts the students have been pairing texts with similar topics to respond to various questions. They used nonfiction features to describe how they helped understand the text, they used evidence to find a problem and solution and annotated the based on proposed questions. We will continue to use multiple texts and various media on the same topic next week.
Students also finished their Informational Writing on Seoul, South Korea! The rubrics will be sent home but the final drafts will be displayed proudly in the hallway. They were able to take notes and learn new information and turn it into a 'travel blog' encouraging people to visit two of three locations in Seoul. They did an awesome job!
We started Unit 3 in Social Studies. Unit 3 will address Culture. How people express culture, how people bring their traditions with them when they move and how culture spreads.
Week of December 9th-13th
Spirit Week starts Monday See the attached flyer or Principal Negron's newsletter for details.
3rd graders spent the week continuing their practice with integrating information from multiple sources. During small group time we used two nonfiction books and websites to answer questions about a topic. We identified trustworthy sources and how to find an answer to a specific question. We used Sloths as our topic which was an adorable way to learn.
During writing we practiced using Domain Specific Vocabulary when writing an informational paragraph. Students learned to be intentional with word choice when writing about a specific topic. Our foundational skills practice focused on /ge/ and /dge/ word endings.
We finished our Social Studies lesson on Culture and Heritage. Students learned all the ways to identify and share culture; music, clothing, art, celebrations and more. We will continue our focus on celebrations by using our research skills to focus on a holiday each day. Working with partners students learned about Hanukah and Ramadan. Next week we will continue with Chinese New Year, Diwali, Lunar New Year, Kwanza and more.
