November Updates
Week of November 4th-8th
It was so great to meet you all on Monday! Thank you for taking the time to come to school and meet with me to discuss your child.
We had a short week this week.
During Language Arts we began Daily 5. Each day the students will complete a different task to support their ELA education. Students will also have an additional activity based on something they need to work on independently. They did a great job working in small groups. I did have to repeat reminders to work quietly so everyone can focus. Please remind your children that making a lot of noise is a distraction to the class. Especially when I am working with a small group. During whole groups lessons, students read two paired nonfiction texts and compared and contrasted them. We also prepared for our writing projects by practicing crafting opening sentences. We will finish Social Studies Unit 2 Lesson 3 next week.
Week of November 11th-15th
Picture Retakes - 11/19
Thanksgiving Break - 11/25-11/29
This week in ELA we used the text Trapped in a Cave to practice comprehension strategies. Students learned about the Thai soccer team that ended up trapped in a flooded cave for 16 days. We used text structure, text evidence and vocabulary to help us understand the article. Using evidence can be tricky for students who are used to using their background knowledge to answer questions.
We drafted our informational writing about two locations in Seoul, South Korea. They have three locations to choose from and have selected their top two choices. We took notes and drafted two paragraphs based on our notes. Some of the students have been to the locations/events so they have had a lot of knowledge to share. The locations are Lotte World, Sky Dome and The Lantern Festival.
In Social Studies we finished Unit 2. We learned about Natural Disasters and how they change the environment. We also learned about different types of energy and the pros and cons of each.
Week of November 18th-22nd
Next week students will write their final drafts of their Informational Writing projects about Korea. If your child brings home a rubric but not the final paper, that means it is hanging on the bulletin board in the hallway! There will be a few from each homeroom hanging in the hallway for a few weeks.
The students had a great week before Thanksgiving! We are continuing with nonfiction text. Students identified the Main Idea and Supporting Details of a text. We continued with Daily 5 which is going very well. In small groups we worked on editing writing and providing feedback. We finished drafting our Informational Writing project. We also reviewed adjectives as a part of speech. There was some confusion, so students will focus on adjectives during their Daily 5 time this week.
I hope everyone had a wonderful break!
