Biography

I am excited to be in my fourth year teaching here at Decatur, and I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself to those of you who are new to Decatur. I am going into my 23rd year of teaching, having served students and families from all across Chicago in grades 3-8, primarily in the subject areas of Science, Social Studies, and Language Arts. I hold a Master of Arts in Teaching Degree from National-Louis University, and in recent years I was awarded a Golden Apple in Teaching Fellowship and MSUrbanSTEM Fellowship. I have also earned National Board Teacher Certification.

I am extremely passionate about teaching and exploring Science with middle school students! My philosophy of teaching science revolves around guiding students into collaboratively exploring phenomena, both inside and outside of our classroom. Based upon their own observations, under the framework of The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), students devise their own evidence-based hypotheses, test their hypotheses with their own designed experiments and/or engineering creations, and after careful data analysis, they apply their language skills in a variety of ways to communicate their findings to a wider audience. Their audiences sometimes include students from other schools and locations, as well as professional scientists and engineers from local universities or corporate foundations, and even around the world via videoconferencing.

When I am not in the pursuit of quenching my own lifelong love of learning new things through Science, I love spending time with family and friends. In the picture you can see my family; my wife, Megan, our children Ruby and Hank, and Hank’s service dog, Dosido. I am honored to be your child’s teacher of Science this year and I look forward to working as a partner with you to help your child grow as a learner!

Tired of Winter? Try a family trip to the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum!

The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum is located right across the street from The Lincoln Park Zoo and is a great place to go on a quick family trip for our students to extend their understanding of phenomena related to how the Earth is changing due to human-induced global warming and climate change. The museum includes live animals native to our region and numerous displays to show what we as individuals can do to help protect our local natural ecosystems.

Week 19: Jan. 24-27, 2022

This week highlights: 8th grade investigating with the skills of paleontologists and geologists examining fossils and stratigraphic drill core samples as part of their unit exploring Evolution; an 8th grade student hand feeding some meal worms to our class pet bearded dragon, "Curtiss"; 6th graders investigating examples of natural resources as they began their new inquiry unit into the impact of increasing human population on the Earth's natural resource deposits, as well as a couple of 6th graders doing some independent microscopy inquiry on their own time.

Week 18: Jan. 18-21, 2022

This week's slideshow highlights: students enjoying some independent reading of Science texts during our calm transition time at the beginning of class thanks to the generous donations of engaging STEM books and magazines from Decatur families; 6th graders cooperatively analyzing and interpreting graphs to identify correlation and causation of variables related to global warming; 7th graders engaging in a collaborative coin toss activity to simulate the randomness of organisms passing their alleles of their genes onto their offspring during sexual reproduction; 6th graders reviewing unit vocabulary terms with quizlet, a fun online learning software platform; and a spattering of pics of our students interacting with our class pet lizard, Curtiss, and investigating aquatic microorganisms from our classroom aquatic ecosystem.

Spaghetti Tower STEM Challenge

To ease back as we begin 2022, each class worked as small teams to practice their creative engineering and design skills by trying to be the team to create the tallest spaghetti tower. A 6th grade team from Room 103 created the tallest at just over 30". This activity is a perfect way to reestablish classroom collaboration and strengthen our community after the long winter break!
